We understand the challenges involved with school electrical work
A school site brings constraints that most premises do not. You have children in the building, a safeguarding responsibility, governors or a trust who will ask what checks were done, and a site that has to be handed back ready for Monday morning.
That is why registration and DBS checking come first for most schools, and rightly so. Our electricians are DBS checked and we are a NICEIC registered contractor, so you can put us on your site and show your safeguarding lead exactly who has been in the building.
The scheduling then largely takes care of itself. Almost all school electrical work is carried out after school, at weekends, on INSET days or during the holidays, and only genuine emergencies happen while lessons are running. The academic calendar is the most useful planning tool a school has, and used properly it means the work happens without a single lesson being moved.

The photograph is a school hall in Surrey where we installed 80 metres of galvanised tray and basket. Two mobile access towers, the ceiling grid opened up, and the containment run at high level across the length of the hall.
Containment is the part of a school job that decides how easy the next twenty years will be. Get the tray and basket in properly, with capacity to spare, and every future addition is a straightforward pull-through rather than a fresh problem to solve.
The hall was in use for assemblies and bookings throughout, so the work was programmed around them, with the towers out and the floor clear whenever the hall was needed.

The academic calendar is the most useful planning tool a school has, and it is routinely wasted. Knowing in February what you want done in August is worth more than any discount.
Summer
The long window. Rewires, full lighting replacement, containment, distribution work, whole-block refurbishment. Booked well in advance.
Easter and Christmas
Two-week windows. A block at a time, a hall, a corridor run, or a testing programme that would be disruptive in term.
Half terms and INSET
Short, useful gaps for single rooms, remedials from a previous report, or catching up on work that slipped.
Term time
Testing, emergency lighting checks, fault finding and small alterations, planned around the timetable and around occupied rooms.

Are your electricians DBS checked?
Yes. Our electricians are DBS checked, and we can confirm that in writing before anyone comes on site so your safeguarding lead has it on file. We will sign in, wear ID and follow your site rules like any other visitor.
If your school has its own contractor induction, send it over with the enquiry and we will complete it before the first visit rather than on the morning.
Can the work be done in the school holidays?
The holidays are where the bulk of school electrical work belongs, and we plan for that. Rewires, containment, lighting replacement and distribution board work all go far better in an empty building, and the programme can be built to finish before the term starts.
Holiday slots fill up early. If you are planning summer works, talking to us in the spring gives you a far better chance of getting the dates you want.
Can you work during term time without disrupting lessons?
Some work can. Inspection and testing, emergency lighting checks, fault finding, small alterations and most reactive repairs can be done in term time if we plan around the timetable, working in a room while the class is elsewhere, or taking a corridor at a time.
Anything that needs a supply off, scaffolding or towers up, or a ceiling open above head height is better in a holiday or after hours. We will tell you honestly which category your job falls into.
How often should a school electrical installation be inspected and tested?
BS 7671 and IET guidance give recommended maximum intervals rather than a single legal number, and the right interval for your school depends on the age and condition of the installation, how the building is used and what a previous report found. Many commercial and education installations sit on a five-year cycle, with shorter intervals where the risk or the condition justifies it.
Separately, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place a duty on you to maintain electrical systems so far as is reasonably practicable to prevent danger. Periodic inspection and testing is how most schools demonstrate they are doing that. Our commercial EICR testing page explains what the report covers.
Can you take on the whole site, or only single jobs?
Both. Some schools call us for a specific project: a hall lighting replacement, a new IT suite, containment for a refurbishment. Others use us for the ongoing electrical work across the site, with testing on a rolling programme and reactive repairs as they come up.

Do you work in nurseries, colleges and academy trusts?
Yes. The constraints are much the same: people in the building, safeguarding, a timetable, and someone who has to sign the work off. Multi-site trusts are usually easier to plan for, not harder, because the holiday windows line up.
